Driver Licenses

New York state recognizes valid driver licenses held by residents of other U.S. states, other countries, U.S. territories, federal districts and Canadian provinces. If you become a resident of New York state, you must apply for a New York state driver license not more than 30 days after you become a New York state resident.

Driving with an international driver license is only permitted during your first three months of residence in the U.S. If you plan to stay longer than three months, you must apply for a New York state driver license.

Obtaining or renewing a New York state driver license is done through the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). To find a DMV office close to you, select Driver License from the Categories list on the right sidebar and search by region, conty or zip code.
