TVHS Students Create Artwork for Proctors

An expert in electronic art is helping Tech Valley High School students learn more than just art while creating a massive installation for Proctor's Theater.

Artist Jesse Stiles is helping guide TVHS juniors through the process of creating an art installation that combines traditional art materials such as paint and paper mache with the non-traditional - including LED lights.

"He is teaching the students how to use three micro-controllers to make electronic animations," said teacher Ed Coolidge.

The goal is to bring the sculpture, which will hang from the atrium of the historic Schenectady theater, to life. Various lights will illuminate and animate the sculpture, which

Stiles, a graduate of RPI's electronic arts program, is meeting with the TVHS students six times over a two-week period that continues through December 11.

The sculpture of the universe - when complete - will be suspended 10- to 12-feet off the floor and occupy a three-story location in the arcade of the historic Proctor's Theater in Schenectady. It will be on display for at least six months, Coolidge said.

The project must be completed by December 20. The work will be installed in Proctor's in January.

Coolidge said the students are really excited to be creating the work.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for the students to really participate in the fine arts in the region," added Principal Dan Liebert.
